In the heart of the enchanting rolling meadows, lived a boy named Shepherd. His existence was pure, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was mainly to tend to his flock of rams.
Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the wind through the solo tree on the peak were his constant co-dwellers. Day after day, guarding his responsibilities instilled in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.
Yet, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for company. During one such occasion out of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a troublesome scheme.
Tales of predators prowling on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a joke on the villagers.
One day he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers rushed up the hills to help but saw nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This trick continued for a couple of more days. However, one morning, a real wolf actually come to prey the here flock. The shepherd boy ran for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could protect only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the consequences of false alarms.
The story of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once broken, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
